There are no official club meetings during the summer months, but Jamie Donaldson, Henry and Tracey McKeown, and Darrel Cone will host turnfests in June, July and August at their shops in Georgetown, Crab Orchard, and Stamping Ground. Check the calendar for details and directions. The turnfests are open to friends and non-members.

RE Turn Event

RE Turn is a fundraising event for both the UK Arboretum and the Bluegrass Area Woodturners. The Arboretum supplies the wood to BAW members from trees that have died and BAW members turn the wood into beautiful pieces that are sold in a silent auction  24 June – 10 July at the Arboretum. East piece has a designated value. Buyers have the option of bidding lower than the value in hopes their bid will be highest, or pay the designated price and avoid the possibilty of being out bid. Funds from the sale are divided between the two organizations. BAW members will do woodturning demonstrations at the reception between 2 and 4 p.m., Sunday, 10 July.

At the April 7th meeting a drawing was held for two scholarships, one to Arrowmount School Of Arts And Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN, and the other to John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC. Both are valued at about $600 each. The winners were Billy Pope and David Sharrard.

The scholarships pay for the school. Expenses such as travel and room and board are not included but are estimated at about $600 in addition. The scholarships were arranged by Derrel Cone. Winners must be members of BAW and the AAW and are required to demo what they learned at a BAW meeting.

The AAW has just released our newest publication, entitled Safety Guidebook for Woodturners. Effective use of a wood lathe is so fundamentally critical that AAW is making this new resource available at no cost to anyone interested in woodturning. We strongly urge you to download this FREE publication. You don’t have to be a member of AAW to get this publication.
