“A different approach to multi-axis turning”

In this demo, I will present a rather different approach to multi-axis turning,
one which I learned in a week-long class with Derek Weidman at Arrowmont. It is
a more ‘sculptural’ or ‘carving’ approach to turning. The workpiece is
repeatedly shifted between different pairs of centers, often at considerable
angles to one another or offcenter. The traces left by the gouge provide texture
to the surfaces. The demo will focus on turning animal heads.

I would suggest that anyone interested in seeing what Derek Weidman does take a look at his Facebook page.

Meeting CANCELLED

Members & friends of BAW:

Our meeting tonight is canceled because of snow. Predictions at noon today were for 3 more inches this late afternoon. Henry would be bringing our guest demonstrator. He has a one hour drive each way. I thought this was too risky—especially getting home with frigid temperatures & ice. We have other members that live even farther away.

Smokies On Fire

Arrowmont, the school for arts and crafts in the heart of the Smokey Mountains, that has given BAW members scholarships for weeklong woodturning sessions has lost two of its dormitories in the recent fire that raged through the area. At the December meeting the BAW board voted to donate $200 to aid in restoring Arrowmont’s losses. It encourages its members to donate individually to help this school recover. Arrowmont is a valuable resource to all craftsmen and women in the region. Please click here to go to the Arrowmont website and make a personal donation to help the school quickly recover.
